After Departure
By Dr. Archan Mehta
After my work is done,
After my departure
From this world,
How will I be remembered?
Did I empathize with
Those less fortunate?
Did I wipe away tears falling
From the eyes of a child?
Did I volunteer at soup kitchens?
Did I find jobs for those
Who were unemployed?
Did I clothe the shivering multitudes?
Did I design policies which were
In the best interests of those
Who were suffering from losses?
Did I stand up to mean bosses?
How will you be remembered
After your work is done?
Will you be remembered
With fondness and nostalgia?
Or will people avoid talking
About you and forget about you?
