People are rightly asking: What can I do to express my resistance to lies, chaos, injustice, violence, evil? How to resist ignorance, cruelty, ignorance, and so-called “christian nationalism”?

Between 10,000 and 15,000 people attended the #NoKings march in Chicago, part of an historic national uprising in resistance to the would-be dictator in the White House. Wikimedia Commons.

More than 11 million Americans marched two weeks ago to protest under banners—many of them super creative—and declare “No Kings.” That was a good thing, a worthy theme, an important act of resistance.

Here is something else Americans can do now. Millions of us. The Senate is contemplating passing a bill called by some “a big, beautiful bill.” It constitutes the budget for the next few years, and, as every householder knows, a budget names priorities that essentially reveal one’s values.

The budget being proposed signifies the values of the current administration and of Project 2025 which, as I have made clear in my book on the Anti-Christ, is an exact opposite of the values that Jesus taught. Values like caring for the stranger and the neglected and the most vulnerable among us. Fascism is like that: It is all about power over.

Now is the time to let vulnerable senators and congress people know what your values are. And how distinct they are from those of the BBB, the “Big, Beautiful Bill”—more accurately renamed, the “Big, Billionaire Welfare Bill.”

Senator Bernie Sanders speaks to the nation on Morality & Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill.”

A big welfare bill for billionaires clear and simple: experts tell us the poorest 1/3 of Americans will lose the most in this bill while billionaires will gain trillions of dollars in benefits. Is that moral? Is that even decent? Is that America?

It will put all of us into greater debt by trillions of dollars, thus raising interest rates on the multi-trillion dollars of debt we are already paying.

Write and phone vulnerable Republican congress people and tell them the truth about this bill. Hold their feet to the fire. Attend town halls. Whether you are their constituent or not, let them know what your values are and demand that they put conscience and the promise of America over party.

Truly, wherever you live, you are their constituent insofar as however they vote on this immoral bill—which is contrary to the values of every religion I have ever studied—will affect you and all your loved ones wherever they live in this country. A congress person from any state approving this bill endangers millions of people in every other state in the union.

People in wheelchairs were zip-tied and escorted out of Capitol as they protested budget cuts to Medicaid. Scripps News.

Do Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, the Trump family, et al really need tax cuts that will result in 16 million Americans losing their health insurance? Bill Gates doesn’t think so! No one with an ounce of moral integrity would think so.

Write as if your life depends on it—because someone’s life who is your neighbor surely does. Host block parties in person or online to get others to write, phone, alert and bother these politicians.

Kill the bill. Save the planet, save our fellow citizens, save a future for our children and grandchildren yet to be born.

Here are vulnerable Republican senators to contact: Thom Tillis (NC); Susan Collins (ME); Jon Husted (OH), John Cornyn (TX); Bill Cassidy (LA).

Vulnerable House representatives include: Mike Lawler (NY); Brian Fitzpatrick (PA); Eli Crane (AZ); Kevin Kuler (CA); Bill Huizensa, (MI); Rob Withers (VA); Don Newhouse (WA); David Valadov (CA); Chip Roy (TX); Nick Begich III (AK); Marionette Miller-Meeks (IO); Gabe Evans (CO); Bon Bacon (NE); Ryan Mackenzie (PA); Scott Perry (PA); Tom Barrett (MI); Andy Ogles (TN); Ann Wagner (MO.); Ashley Hinson (IO): Cory Mills (FL).

You can reach any of them through the Congressional switchboard number: (202) 224-3121

Call on them urgently to kill the Billionaire Welfare Bill, moral monstrosity that it is.

Queries for Contemplation

Did you attend a march on No Kings Day? Consider that taking 30 minutes or so to write a letter and distribute it to several of the congress people above takes a lot less time than attending and marching in a march as millions did a few weeks ago.  Go for it!

Trump & The MAGA Movement as Anti-Christ: A Handbook for the 2024 Election

Matthew Fox tells us that he had always shied away from using the term “Anti-Christ” because it was so often used to spread control and fear. However, given today’s rise of authoritarianism and forces of democracide, ecocide, and christofascism, he turns the tables in this book employing the archetype for the cause of justice, democracy, and a renewed Earth and humanity.
From the Foreword: If there was ever a time, a moment, for examining the archetype of the Antichrist, it is now…Read this book with an open mind. Good and evil are real forces in our world. ~~ Caroline Myss, author of Anatomy of the Spirit and Conversations with the Divine.

A Spirituality Named Compassion: Uniting Mystical Awareness with Social Justice

In A Spirituality Named Compassion, Matthew Fox delivers a profound exploration of the meaning and practice of compassion. Establishing a spirituality for the future that promises personal, social, and global healing, Fox marries mysticism with social justice, leading the way toward a gentler and more ecological spirituality and an acceptance of our interdependence which is the substratum of all compassionate activity.
“Well worth our deepest consideration…Puts compassion into its proper focus after centuries of neglect.” –The Catholic Register

Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh: Transforming Evil in Soul and Society

Visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology of evil that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. In comparing the Eastern tradition of the 7 chakras to the Western tradition of the 7 capital sins, Fox allows us to think creatively about our capacity for personal and institutional evil and what we can do about them.
“A scholarly masterpiece embodying a better vision and depth of perception far beyond the grasp of any one single science.  A breath-taking analysis.” — Diarmuid O’Murchu, author of Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics

Creation Spirituality: Liberating Gifts for the Peoples of the Earth

Fox’s spirituality weds the healing and liberation found in North American Creation Spirituality and in South American Liberation Theology. Creation Spirituality challenges readers of every religious and political persuasion to unite in a new vision through which we learn to honor the earth and the people who inhabit it as the gift of a good and just Creator.
“A watershed theological work that offers a common ground for religious seekers and activists of all stripes.” — Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice.
“I am reading Liberating Gifts for the People of the Earth by Matt Fox.  He is one that fills my heart and mind for new life in spite of so much that is violent in our world.” ~ Sister Dorothy Stang.

Original Blessing: A Primer in Creation Spirituality

Matthew Fox lays out a whole new direction for Christianity—a direction that is in fact very ancient and very grounded in Jewish thinking (the fact that Jesus was a Jew is often neglected by Christian theology): the Four Paths of Creation Spirituality, the Vias Positiva, Negativa, Creativa and Transformativa in an extended and deeply developed way.
Original Blessing makes available to the Christian world and to the human community a radical cure for all dark and derogatory views of the natural world wherever these may have originated.” –Thomas Berry, author, The Dream of the Earth; The Great Work; co-author, The Universe Story
